Today sports massage is an advanced form that uses old and new techniques to boost an athlete’s performance and endurance. The other main benefits of sports massage are: - Cures and restores mobility to injured muscle. Prevents injuries and loss of mobility to injured muscles. Maintains the entire body in better physical condition. Extends both good health and overall life of your athletic career. Of course it is not just athletes that can benefit from sports massage. In the world of work we often find ourselves sat in the same ill-postured position for long periods of time, putting undue pressure on certain muscles - the cause of lower back pain for a lot of people. Repetitive movements are also a source of discomfort for many, whether they are cutting hair or laying bricks. Massage can also have physiological benefits. Many people say they have never felt as relaxed as they have after a sports massage. Sports massage is the only treatment that is used to specifically help prevent injury, in sports, due to posture and at work. How does it work? Below outlines some reasons why massage is so beneficial. All the cells of the body need a good supply of blood, which contains all the ingredients needed for their growth, repair and nutrition. The cells also need to eliminate the waste materials that arise from the production of energy, and debris from any tissue damage or inflammation. The stroking techniques of massage have a pumping effect, which stimulates the circulation of blood and so increases both the supply and removal of substances on a cellular level. As well as being beneficial to local tissues, the general circulatory stimulation can help improve the health or recovery of most other systems of the body. Microcirculation: The walls of the blood vessels need to be soft and pliable so that they can assist the pumping action and allow filtration and absorption through them. As massage strokes force blood through the capillaries and arterioles it has a stretching effect on the vessel walls, which can help increase their size, capacity and function. Lymphatic system: This is basically the system that takes away your waste and toxins. The motive force for lymphatic flow comes through muscle contraction. Massage provides a motive force for this system, which is often limited when injury is involved, and gravity can also have a strong negative effect. The lymph vessels generally run parallel to the veins, and massage strokes greatly stimulate the flow through both of them at the same time. Interstitial permeability: Tiny pores that allow certain chemicals to pass through while others are held back. These structures can become thick and fibrous, the pores may close and the flow of interstitial fluid will suffer. The mechanical effect of forcing fluids through the tissues can help improve this situation by opening these pores. Injury: A vital part of the initial part of healing is the formation of scar tissue, however often too much is produced. Friction techniques in sports massage can break down scar tissue into smaller particles, which can be digested by phagocyte cells and absorbed into the lymph vessels. Fibrous tissue: For muscle to function, the fibres need to be able to glide smoothly alongside one another, but when stuck together they cannot do this. In effect the area will not function. Muscle fibres can mat together to form a hard lump or knot. Adhesions can also form between different structures, such as between a ligament and tendon or a muscle and bone. This can lead to a significant restriction in movement and function. Sports massage can break down the adhesions by gradually breaking the adhesive bonds apart. Sports massage stretches muscles in a way they cannot be stretched using conventional methods. Nervous system: Massage can affect the nervous system in several ways. The stimulation effect releases tissue tension, reducing pain. Migraine, insomnia and digestive disorders can also be
